HPEF supports preservation education through projects and partnerships.

For over thirty-five years Historic Preservation Education Foundation (HPEF) has been a leading provider of historic preservation knowledge for architectural conservators and architects, tradespeople, building owners, students, and all those who care for and care about historic buildings.

HPEF is proud to be partnering with Stuart Weitzman School of Design Department of Historic Preservation, the Association for Preservation Technology Delaware Valley Chapter and the International Masonry Institute on the upcoming symposium Cement Age / Concrete Nation. The conference will take place October 4-6, 2024 in Philadelphia, PA. Stay tuned for updates on the symposium and join the mailing list.

HPEF is now accepting applications for the spring call of the Partners in Training grant program. This grant supports training initiatives associated with the technical aspects of preservation within the United States. The details of this program, past recipients and the application process are available at our Partners in Training website.

We are pleased to announce that the spring Call for Proposals for HPEF’s Partners in Documentation program is now open. This grant program was developed to expand student training opportunities in recording historic structures and landscapes according to the standards of the National Park Service’s Heritage Documentation Programs. The goal is to expand learning opportunities in heritage documentation training, while also increasing the representation of modern and recent past structures alongside other underrepresented examples of built heritage and landscapes within the Library of Congress collection. The deadline for submission is May 1, 2024. Please visit the program website for more information on how to apply.

Partners in Training Winter 2023 Grant Recipients Announced

HPEF awarded Partners in Training grants to seven organizations in an effort to support further programming in technical preservation training and to create more accessible opportunities for emerging professionals in historic preservation and allied trades. We congratulate Adirondack Architectural Heritage, Columbus Landmarks, Historic Hawai’i Foundation, Latinos in Heritage Conservation, Revolution Workshop, The Green-wood Historic Fund, and The Peale: Baltimore’s Community Museum on their successful applications. We look forward to sharing updates on these exciting initiatives on our social media.

Remote Learning Opportunities and Resources from HPEF

During a period of social distancing and online teaching, HPEF.US is a valuable source for remote learning on preservation topics. In addition to free pdf downloads of HPEF conference proceedings and publications, the site offers video content, an online window exhibit, and other materials. In collaboration with the National Park Service and the American Institute of Architects, we offer quizzes that test knowledge contained in select NPS Preservation Briefs. Twelve quizzes are available now and more will be added in the future. The quizzes can be taken for personal development or for AIA Continuing Education Learning Units without charge.
